Some individuals flee as a result of natural calamities such as earthquakes, tornadoes, storms, and hurricanes, which might render them homeless and deprived of nourishment. Seeking refuge, they go to the United States and are compelled to rapidly integrate into the culture. It is imperative for them to acquire proficiency in the language, surmount the psychological distress caused by their survival, and persist in their pursuit of higher education. This interactive event aims to facilitate deliberate discussions among higher education teachers, staff, and students regarding effective strategies both within and outside the classroom to enhance support for this specific group of students.

Addressing the Needs of Temporary Protected Status College Students in Response to Natural Disasters 

Temporary protected status (TPS) has historically served as a humanitarian remedy for migrants who who cannot return home safely. However, attempts to provide them with a means to obtain citizenship have sparked renewed discussion regarding the immigration policy of the United States. TPS students are ineligible for financial assistance, and they frequently have significant financial obligations to cover their annual college tuition expenses. Additionally, they grapple with the constant concern that their TPS status may terminate abruptly. In this workshop, we will explore the varied immigration statuses, such as TPS and f-1, and address how to support this demographic of undocumented students and best practices.
